Welcome to another PANAKEIA blog. Today we will take a closer look at one of our most precious ingredients in natural cosmetics products, olive squalane. It is known for having almost miraculous moisturising and regenerating properties for the skin. Is that really true? In today's article we look more closely at the value of olive squalane in cosmetics, we look at its benefits and uses, and we introduce you to some of our products containing squalane.
What is olive squalane?

First of all we should say that squalane and squalene are 2 different things. Olive squalane comes from olives and is the hydrogenated form of squalene, a naturally occurring lipid found in human skin. Squalene plays a key role in maintaining the skin's moisture and its barrier function, but its levels decrease with age. Olive squalane replenishes this vital lipid, which makes it an excellent humectant and emollient in natural cosmetics products.
How olive squalane is made
Olive squalane is extracted through a careful process that involves the hydrogenation of squalene sourced from olives. This process stabilises the molecule, making it less prone to oxidation and better suited to cosmetic preparations. The resulting squalane is a light, non-greasy oil that mimics the skin's natural sebum. From this point of view we can say, for simplicity, that squalane and squalene have similar effects on human skin and we can see them almost as one and the same thing.
The benefits of olive squalane in natural cosmetics
The unique properties of olive squalane make it a significant ingredient in natural cosmetics. Here are some of its key benefits:
Olive squalane moisturises beautifully
Olive squalane is an excellent moisturiser that gives the skin deep, long-lasting moisture. It sinks deep into the skin easily and without leaving a greasy residue. That is why it is ideal for all skin types, including oily skin and acne-prone skin.
Olive squalane improves skin suppleness
Regular use of olive squalane can improve the skin's elasticity and firmness and also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It supports the skin's natural renewal process and its youthful, radiant look.
The antioxidant properties of olive squalane
Olive squalane is also rich in antioxidants, which help protect the skin from oxidative stress, free radical damage and environmental stressors such as wind, sun and the like. This makes it an effective anti-ageing ingredient that helps keep the skin healthy-looking even at a more advanced age.
Olive squalane soothes irritated skin
Thanks to its calming properties, olive squalane soothes irritated or sensitive skin. It helps reduce redness and irritation, which is why it is also appreciated by skin that tends towards dryness, flaking and reactivity.
Olive squalane does not clog pores
Olive squalane is non-comedogenic, which means it does not clog pores. And because it does not clog pores, it contributes to overall healthier-looking skin. It helps balance sebum production and keeps the skin clear.

How to use pure olive squalane

Pure olive squalane is incredibly versatile and can be woven into your beauty routine in a number of ways. Here are a few tips on how to use it:
- As a facial moisturiser: After cleansing and toning, apply a few drops of pure olive squalane to the face and neck. Massage gently until absorbed.
- As a hair serum: Apply a few drops of olive squalane to the ends of your hair to help prevent split ends and add shine. For a deeply nourishing treatment, apply a generous amount of squalane to the hair, cover it with a cap and leave it on for at least 30 minutes. Then wash your hair.
- As a body oil: Use pure olive squalane as a moisturising body oil by applying it to damp skin after showering. Squalane locks in moisture beautifully and keeps your skin hydrated all day long.
- As a cuticle oil: Massage a small amount of olive squalane into your cuticles to keep them soft and healthy.
Interesting facts about olive squalane

- Squalane was originally obtained from shark liver oil, but for reasons of ethics and sustainability plant alternatives such as olive squalane are now used more often.
- Olive squalane is non-toxic, non-irritating and hypoallergenic, which is why it is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
- Because olive squalane is stable and resistant to oxidation, it has a longer shelf life compared with many other natural oils.
- Olive squalane can also be used as a carrier oil for essential oils, increasing their absorption and effectiveness.
- Besides cosmetics, olive squalane is sometimes used in pharmaceutical products and food supplements for its potential benefits.
