What to keep in mind in your summer skincare? 5 laws never to break

Have you ever heard that your winter or spring skincare routine simply will not work in the summer heat? The mix of perspiration, air conditioning and sunshine calls for a completely different approach to skincare. There is no need to worry that this change will be hard on your budget, though. It is enough to understand what your skin really needs at this time of year, and you can put together a clever routine by swapping out just a few of the products you have been using.  We have gathered for you 5 basic laws of summer care, thanks to which your skin will glow with health even on hot days.

Summer skincare

Get to know the basics of summer care

In summer we naturally feel like simplifying everything. Less make-up, lighter clothes, quicker mornings, more time outdoors. And skincare should change in exactly the same way – it should not disappear altogether, it simply needs adapting. Many women feel that when the skin is oilier in summer or perspires more, it does not need hydration. Others rely on the SPF in their make-up being enough, or believe that sun cream is only for holidays. Yet these innocent little misconceptions can lead to irritation, clogged pores, pigment spots, premature ageing or a weakened skin barrier.

What do the experts say?

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using water-resistant products with SPF 30 and above. The Skin Cancer Foundation also reminds us that sun cream needs to be reapplied every two hours after swimming or intense perspiration. Summer skincare is therefore mainly about keeping a perfect balance: protect, hydrate, cleanse, soothe and do not overload.

Law 1: SPF is not a bonus in your routine, it is a MUST-HAVE product

If you were to take away only one single thing from this whole article, let it be this: SPF is the most important step of morning skincare all year round, and in summer it is absolutely essential. Sunlight reaches the skin even when it is not hot, when it is cloudy or when you are sitting in the office by the window. The Cleveland Clinic explains that UVA rays penetrate deeper and contribute directly to the premature ageing of the skin, while UVB rays affect the surface of the skin and cause burning. In summer, therefore, just any product with the abbreviation SPF on the packaging is not enough.

It is important that the product is:

  • Broad spectrum (protecting against both UVA and UVB rays)
  • With a protection factor of at least 30 (ideally 50)
  • Made especially for the face (so it does not clog the pores)
  • Pleasant to wear every day
  • Ideally water resistant.

A very common mistake is applying too little product. SPF only works properly when you apply it in a generous enough layer. Another misconception is applying it in the morning and feeling protected for the whole day. According to the Mayo Clinic Health System, protection from sun cream usually lasts two hours or less, which is why it needs to be reapplied regularly.

And what about make-up with SPF? Take it only as a pleasant bonus, never as your only protection. We usually do not apply it in an amount large enough to give the protection declared on the packaging.

Summer beauty tip: apply SPF as the last step of your morning routine. During the day you can top it up comfortably with light SPF fluids, sticks, sprays or compact powders with protection – whichever suits you best.

Law 2: Hydration matters even when the skin is oily

Summer can be tricky for the skin. It shines more, we perspire, and so we feel we can skip moisturiser altogether. It is important to realise, though, that oiliness and hydration are not the same thing. Skin can be oily on the surface and deeply dehydrated underneath. High temperatures, sunshine, air conditioning, salty sea water and chlorine in the pool all contribute to a rapid loss of water from the skin, and as a result you may feel tightness, sensitivity, flakes, a dull look, but paradoxically also increased sebum production – with this overproduction the skin is trying to compensate for the dryness inside. Do not skip hydration in summer; simply change the textures. Instead of rich creams, choose gels, emulsions or light hydrating serums.

Wonderful summer allies in the ingredient list are:

  • Hyaluronic acid – binds water in the skin
  • Aloe vera – refreshes and soothes
  • Glycerin – intensively supports hydration
  • Panthenol – ideal for soothing irritation
  • Niacinamide – strengthens the skin barrier and balances sebum production

Hydration does not begin and end with a cream, though. During the summer months, keep up a consistent drinking routine. A lack of fluids shows up immediately in tiredness and headaches, and also in the skin, which then looks dull and loses its suppleness.

Law 3: Cleansing must be thorough, yet gentle

In summer, far more perspiration, sebum, layers of SPF, dust and impurities gather on the skin during the day. That is why evening cleansing is an absolute pillar of the summer routine. If you do not cleanse your skin thoroughly in the evening, you create ideal conditions for clogged pores, blemishes and inflammation. On the other hand, cleansing that is too aggressive can disturb the protective barrier. The answer is double cleansing:

1.Step (oil or balm based): gently dissolves SPF, make-up and excess sebum.

2.Step (water based – gel or foam): finishes cleansing the skin itself and prepares it to absorb the care that follows.

Morning cleansing can be a little gentler, but plain water is never enough. While you sleep at night, your skin works diligently, regenerates and releases toxins and sebum. This night-time film needs to be washed away gently in the morning with a mild cleansing product. If your skin feels tight and stings after washing, your product is too aggressive.

Law 4: Sometimes less is more – especially with active ingredients

Summer is not the ideal time for wild cosmetic experiments. Strong exfoliating acids, harsh scrubs or the incorrect use of retinoids can needlessly irritate the skin and dramatically increase its sensitivity to sunlight. That does not mean you have to give up active ingredients entirely, only that you need to be more careful. Keep retinoids and acids strictly for the evening, and during the day be sure to pair them with a high SPF. In the morning summer routine, on the other hand, antioxidants fit in perfectly, especially vitamin C, which helps the skin look brighter, helps with the look of pigment spots and protects cells from oxidative stress caused by the sun (do remember, though, that it does not replace SPF, it only complements it).

Law 5: After the sun, skin needs calm, regeneration and gentleness

The evening routine after a whole day outdoors should be minimalist and soothing. Forget transformative serums and let your skin rest. Look for products containing aloe vera, panthenol, gotu kola, oat extracts or ceramides. The goal is not to fix the skin in a single night, but to help it return to its natural balance. If burning does occur, the skin has developed real inflammation. Give it complete calm, coolness and intensive hydration. Never forget that repeated and frequent sunburn is not just an aesthetic matter, but a real risk to the health of your cells.

When applying SPF we automatically think only of the face. Yet there are areas we regularly miss and the sun burns them first. What should you never forget?

  • The ears and the back of the neck
  • The neck and décolleté (the décolleté should be a direct continuation of your facial routine)
  • The lips (they deserve a balm with SPF)
  • The hairline
  • The tops of the feet.

Summer skin does not need perfection, but attention

Skincare in summer should not limit us; on the contrary, it should be our support. You do not need a complicated routine or dozens of products. It is enough to learn how to protect, hydrate and gently cleanse your skin. Beautiful summer skin is not the skin that is perfectly tanned, but the skin that is protected, vital, calm and healthy.  Choose gentle cleansers, light hydration, soothing ingredients and do not forget daily protection from the sun. Your skin will thank you with freshness, balance and a natural glow.
