PDRN as the future of regenerative cosmetics

In recent years the world of cosmetics has been going through a quiet revolution. Women no longer long only for painful wrinkle filling — they are looking for ways to bring the skin back into balance and to rejuvenate it gently, as naturally as possible. Regenerative cosmetics can fulfil part of that wish, and its absolute king is PDRN. If you are looking for an ingredient that genuinely changes the structure of the skin at cell level, you have just found it.

In this article we'll dive deep into the world of nucleotides, exosomes and spicules. We'll look at why PDRN is the heart of Korean beauty and how we at Panakeia have taken hold of this technology for your delight.

the PDRN ingredient

What is PDRN?

The abbreviation PDRN stands for Polydeoxyribonucleotide. These are fragments of DNA (nucleotides) with a low molecular weight. These fragments are nothing new in medicine and for decades have been used in regenerative medicine to support the healing of tissue and skin.

How does PDRN communicate with your skin?

Our cells have specific receptors on their surface, namely the A2A adenosine receptors. PDRN works like a key that fits this receptor exactly. When that happens, the cell starts up what could be described, in lay terms, as a rescue and building programme:

  • Activation of fibroblasts: The cells begin to produce a massive amount of new collagen and elastin.
  • A calming response: PDRN helps lower the level of inflammatory cytokines, which contributes to calming skin prone to blemishes, irritation or chronic ageing (so-called inflammaging).
  • DNA repair: It helps cells correct errors in their own genetic code caused, for example, by too much time in the sun.
  • Neovascularisation: PDRN supports the forming of new micro-vessels, so the skin is better oxygenated and nourished from within.

From Rejuran injections to home care

If we want to understand the popularity of PDRN, we need to look to South Korea. Seoul is today the capital city of innovation, and it is here that PDRN became a synonym for so-called glass skin. Korean women have PDRN applied by injection (known as the Rejuran Healer treatment) to achieve a porcelain texture and a taut look to the skin.

Current technology, however, has made it possible to stabilise and adapt these DNA fragments so that they are effective when applied externally in serums and creams too. What was once the privilege of expensive clinics we now bring at Panakeia as part of your everyday routine. Slovak science joins with the Korean trend and creates unique formulations adapted to our climate and skin type.

Animal PDRN (Salmon DNA)

It is obtained from the milt of salmonid fish. Its main advantage is that salmon DNA fragments are 95 % identical to human DNA. Thanks to this similarity, animal PDRN acts in the skin as direct building material. When it enters a cell, the cell recognises it immediately and uses it to repair its damaged parts. It is a more forceful, faster and very effective way of renewal, ideal for deep scars and severely damaged skin.

Plant PDRN (Phyto-PDRN)

Plant PDRN isn't identical to human DNA, but it works on the principle of biomimetics – it mimics the functions of nucleotides so as to bring about the same regenerative response in the skin.It is obtained through complex extraction methods from plants that naturally have a high concentration of nucleic acids and an ability to renew tissue quickly. Among the most common and most effective sources are:

  • Gotu kola (Centella Asiatica): It contains specific nucleotides with a strong calming effect. Plant PDRN from Centella is highly prized in international studies for its ability to repair the skin barrier without the risk of irritation.
  • Goji (Lycium chinense): The extraction of PDRN from Goji stem cells focuses on stimulating the mesenchymal stem cells in our own skin.
  • Wheat and Rice: DNA fragments are isolated from these crops that are rich in the amino acids needed for protein synthesis in the skin.

Who does plant PDRN suit best?

Plant PDRN is ideal for people with reactive or very sensitive skin. While animal PDRN can be too intense for some, the plant version works with the skin more gently. It is wonderful for long-term use, when we would like to give the skin natural youthfulness gradually and safely. What's more, Phyto-PDRN often gives lovelier results with pigment spots and evening out the skin tone, because plant extracts naturally contain a high proportion of antioxidants as well.

Panakeia Phyto Exosome PDRN

For those looking for a vegan solution and effectiveness at the same time, we have created the Phyto Exosome PDRN edition. This set contains not only plant PDRN, but exosomes too.

the PDRN edition

What are exosomes and why are they key?

In this edition we use plant exosomes (PhytoCellTec™). They are microscopic vesicles which in nature serve to carry information between cells. In cosmetics they work as an intelligent transport system. Ordinary creams have trouble getting through the lipid barrier of the skin, but exosomes, thanks to their nano-size, carry plant PDRN, peptides and antioxidants straight to the heart of the matter.

Key ingredients of the set:

  • Snow mushroom (Tremella): This mushroom can bind water at 500 times its own weight, surpassing even hyaluronic acid.
  • Hydrosella™: An extract of wild rose that provides hydration lasting up to 72 hours.
  • Malachite extract: A natural antioxidant that shields cells from environmental stress and gives the products their characteristic bluish colour. 5.

PDRN Exosome Spicule Serum 2000

Our biggest step in innovation is the PDRN exosome spicule serum with salmon DNA. It is a product for those who would like intensive renewing care.

Spicules are microscopic needles obtained from marine or freshwater sponge. They are so small that you won't see them with the eye, but your skin will feel them straight after application. As the serum is massaged in, they create thousands of invisible micro-channels.

  • Transport: Through these channels the salmon PDRN reaches deep into the dermis.
  • Biostimulation: The presence of spicules in the skin (where they stay active for up to 72 hours, until they are naturally washed away) keeps the skin in continuous renewal and repair.

A synergistic composition: The serum also contains fermented rice water and a complex of 5 forms of hyaluronic acid, which helps ensure that the skin isn't only stimulated, but also immediately soothed and deeply hydrated.

Who does PDRN suit and how to use it?

PDRN is universal, because it targets the health of the cell, not just a surface symptom.

  • Mature skin (35+): To firm softened contours, „iron out“ fine wrinkles and restore the density of the skin.
  • Skin with acne scarring: PDRN speeds up the remodelling of tissue, which smooths the surface of the skin.
  • Dehydrated and tired skin: It brings back radiance and vitality after illness, stress or a lack of sleep.

How to use:

The Phyto exosome PDRN range: Use morning and evening. The toner prepares the pH, the serum delivers the concentrate and the cream creates a protective film.

Spicule serum: Ideally use in the evening after cleansing. A gentle prickling when you touch your face after application is completely normal. Do remember to use SPF protection during the day, because stimulated skin needs protection from UV light.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine PDRN with retinol?

PDRN and retinol complement each other wonderfully, because PDRN helps restore the barrier that retinol can irritate. We do recommend, though, not using the spicule serum and retinol on the same evening, so that the skin isn't over-stimulated and irritated.

Is there a difference in effect between plant and salmon PDRN?

Salmon PDRN is a little stronger in the biostimulation of collagen, so it suits wrinkles and scars. Plant PDRN is the master of the calming effect and long-term brightening, while being ideal for very sensitive skin.

Why are Panakeia products blue?

It is thanks to malachite extract and other natural ingredients. We don't use synthetic colourants — the colour is the result of pure plant and mineral extracts.
