Most of us spend hours choosing the perfect serum or cream; we study reviews, compare active ingredients and search for the one that will change our skin beyond recognition. In the middle of all this, though, we forget the most important thing on which everything else rests – cleansing the skin properly. So if you wake up in the morning with skin that still shows traces of make-up, or if clogged pores, little blemishes or a dull tone are on your mind, the problem is probably not in the creams or serums, but in the way the skin is cleansed.
Double cleansing is not just a fashionable trend that came to us from Korea. It is a scientifically grounded way to truly remove from the skin the layers we build up on it during the day. Without proper cleansing, your skin not only does not glow, it literally suffocates under a layer of oxidised sebum and impurities.

Why is one product not enough?
During the day our face meets two types of impurities that have a completely different chemical structure. To understand why we need two phases, we need to look at the biology of the skin.
The first group are the impurities soluble in fat. Here belong not only make-up, but above all water-resistant SPF filters. Creams with a protection factor are designed to hold onto the skin as if nailed there, even when we perspire or come into contact with water. Besides these there is city smog, dust particles bound to oil and your own sebum. The second group are the impurities soluble in water, such as perspiration and dead skin cells.
An ordinary water-based cleansing gel often just slides ineffectively over oily impurities. Imagine it as trying to wash a greasy pan after baking with clean water alone, without any detergent. Water does not join with fat and the result is more than predictable. The remains of make-up and oxidised sebum stay in the pores, where they mix with bacteria, cause inflammation and speed up ageing – and it is precisely here that the law of chemistry enters the scene: like dissolves like. For this reason the first phase needs to be built on quality oils.
Phase 1: Dissolving impurities with the strength of natural oils
The first step of double cleansing is using an oil-based product. The aim at this moment is not to wash the skin in the classic sense of the word, but literally to melt and release everything that has settled on it during the whole day.
Many women with oily and demanding skin instinctively fear oils, because there is an idea that oil will clog the pores even more. Yet the opposite is true. It is oil that can reach into the pores most effectively, join with the hardened sebum and draw it out. If you cleanse oily skin only with aggressive drying gels, you take away its natural barrier and the skin then begins, in a kind of panic, to produce even more sebum to protect itself. Oil cleansing breaks this vicious circle.
At Panakeia we have developed products for the first phase that respect the biology of the skin:
- Zuzička – cleansing oil: This product is an absolute classic for those of you who love lightness and purity. It contains blackcurrant and grapeseed oil. Grapeseed oil is known for its ability to leave no oily film and for its high content of linoleic acid, which is key for demanding skin. Blackcurrant oil in turn gives the skin the antioxidants it needs to meet the influences of smog.
- Cleansing Balm Sensitive – organic balm: If your skin is rather dry, reactive or suffers in cold weather, a balm texture will be a blessing for you. It contains shea butter and sea buckthorn extract, which is a little wonder for renewal. On contact with the warmth of your palms the balm turns into a silky oil that soothes and nourishes the skin during the massage. You can even choose from two more cleansing balms, for mature and acne-prone skin.
- Báthoryčka two-phase make-up remover with Q10 and Dragon's blood: This product is meant for women who need extra strength but do not wish to compromise on gentleness. Dragon's blood – the precious resin from the tree Croton lechleri – is said to have incredible soothing and antioxidant qualities. Coenzyme Q10 in this composition moreover cares for the delicate skin around the eyes and helps prevent lines from appearing too early. And if Báthoryčka is not the one for you, you can choose from other kinds of two-phase oils.
And what about our beloved micellar water?
An unceasing debate surrounds micellar water in the beauty world. Many women love it for how practical it is , yet if you are among those who finish their cleansing with micellar water, you are risking the health of your skin.
What happens on your face
Micellar water works on the basis of micelles – small molecules of surfactants dispersed in water. These molecules have the ability to bind impurities and oil to themselves. The problem, however, lies in the mechanics of the whole process. When you use only a cotton pad with micellar water, you do not really wash the impurities off the skin. You mostly just spread them over the surface and take part of them away mechanically with the pad. Whatever remains in the pores stays there.
The trap called no rinsing needed
The greatest marketing myth is the words on the packaging: no need to rinse. Imagine putting soap on your hands and then, instead of rinsing it under running water, simply wiping it off with a dry towel. This is exactly what you do to your face with micellar water. The surfactants in micellar water have the task of breaking the surface tension of impurities. If you leave them on the skin all night, they slowly begin to dissolve your natural protective film as well. The result is skin that in time becomes oversensitive and dry, or on the contrary begins to grow oily beyond control, because it is trying to replace the missing barrier.
When does micellar water make sense?
Micellar water is not an enemy, it is a first-aid tool. It is wonderful for travelling, where you have no access to running water, for a quick cleanse after the gym, or on days when you are so tired that you would otherwise go to bed without cleansing at all. In such a case micellar water is better than nothing.
Within a healthy, sustainable routine, though, micellar water should always be only the opening act. If you use it for a first removal of eye make-up and impurities, it should always be followed by a second step – washing with water and a gentle cleansing foam, gel or milk. Only then do you rinse away the remains of surfactants and impurities and give your skin room to truly breathe. Double cleansing with oils is far gentler to the skin, because it dissolves impurities naturally and without any need for rubbing with a cotton pad.
Phase 2: Deep cleansing and individual care
Once the oil phase has melted the make-up and impurities, it is time to finish with a water base. This phase removes the remains of the oil emulsion together with perspiration and dust. It is key that the product in this phase does not irritate the skin. The feeling of squeaky skin after washing is in fact a warning signal, meaning that you have removed from the skin what should have stayed there for its protection.
At Panakeia we have developed two foams for this phase, which turn the routine into an experience:
- Báthoryčka cleansing facial foam: We put our trust in the time-honoured strength of dragon's blood. This foam is ideal for skin that lives with little inflammations, is tired or needs strong renewal. It works as an antioxidant and leaves the skin supple.
- Malachit cleansing facial foam: This product is a true treasure. Malachite is used in cosmetics for its detoxifying qualities. If you live in a city, your skin meets free radicals every day. The malachite foam works as a magnet for toxins, brightens the skin beautifully and gives it a healthy spark.
Toning as the key to balance
Although toning is technically not part of the double cleansing process, it is its absolutely essential completion. Many women leave this step out, yet a toner is the magical bridge that connects cleansing with the care that follows.
Why is a toner so important?
- Balancing the pH: Tap water often has a pH of around 7 to 8 (alkaline), while healthy skin needs a slightly acidic environment (around 5.5) to be able to defend itself against bacteria. A toner brings this pH back to normal at once.
- Preparing for serums: Imagine the skin as a sponge. If it is completely dry and hard, water just slides over it. But if it is gently damp and filled with toner, it will draw your precious serum with hyaluronic acid or vitamin C in much more deeply. Without toning you literally waste the potential of the rest of your cosmetics.
- Soothing: Panakeia toners contain plant extracts that soothe the skin immediately after contact with water and prepare it for rest.
Since every skin is unique, each one needs something different. So choose the facial toner that will suit your skin best.
The most common mistakes that cost us beautiful skin
Even with the loveliest products you can harm your skin if the technique is not right. Here are the most common missteps:
- Oil on a wet face: This is the most common mistake. Always apply the oil or balm (Zuzička/Sensitive) to dry skin with dry hands. Only then can the oil bind to the impurities.
- Water that is too hot: Hot water irritates the blood vessels and dries the skin out excessively. Use lukewarm water – it is the gentlest way for your skin barrier.
- Forgetting the neck and hairline: Make-up does not end at the chin. The remains of products at the roots of the hair are a common cause of blemishes on the forehead.
- Drying aggressively: Never rub your face with a towel after washing. Just lay the towel against it gently to draw off the excess moisture. Even lovelier is to keep a small towel just for your face and change it every 2-3 days
- Skipping cleansing when you have not worn make-up: This is the most common misconception. Even without make-up your skin produces sebum, and if you have worn SPF, double cleansing is essential, even a must. The filters in sun creams are designed to resist water and perspiration, and ordinary washing with a foam will not lift them from the skin.
Frequently asked questions
Is it enough to do double cleansing only in the evening?
Yes, in the evening it is key. In the morning, a gentle refreshment with the Malachit foam or just lukewarm water is enough for the skin, so that you do not remove the natural oils it produced during the night for its own protection.
Can I use ordinary kitchen oil?
No. Cosmetic oils are hydrophilic – this means that on contact with water they turn into a milky emulsion and rinse away easily. Kitchen oil will leave an oily coating on your face that is hard to remove and may cause clogged pores.
Is this method suitable for mature skin as well?
Certainly yes. Mature skin tends to be drier and double cleansing gives it the hydration and nourishment it needs already in the cleansing step.
Double cleansing and the toning that follows are the true foundation for the next steps in your routine. Massaging with oil releases tension in the facial muscles and stimulates the lymphatic system, which helps to soften puffiness. When you add to this the unique strength of natural cosmetics, you are investing in your future beauty. Healthy skin is not the result of one expensive cream, but of a consistent, well-chosen routine.
