Urucum - how to choose. The season of summer holidays and enjoying the summer rays is just around the corner. Alongside relaxation and unforgettable moments, every one of us longs for a beautifully chocolate, long-lasting tan. The family company PANAKEIA, which makes honest natural cosmetics, was the first in Slovakia to bring an absolutely groundbreaking active ingredient to the cosmetics market, one that speeds up tanning. That ingredient is Urucum. In today's article we will talk about how to tan more easily and reveal the strength hidden within Urucum.
What makes Urucum so wonderful
Urucum powder comes from the seeds of the Bixa Orellana tree - native to the Amazon rainforest, it has thorny fruits filled with red seeds. It was used by the peoples of the Amazon basin long before Europeans came to this land. The powder was used to colour the body, and even the hair. Thanks to its high beta-carotene content (it contains a hundred times more than carrot oil), it gives the skin a natural, golden, quick and long-lasting tan.
Urucum and its qualities

Urucum prepares the skin for the sun. It is truly a treasure of nature, used in sun oils and creams that activate a quicker tan. Urucum prepares the skin for sunbathing very effectively and supports its pigmentation, which can make it a wonderful ally for the fair-skinned among us, who tan with difficulty.
What are the benefits of Urucum?
- Prepares the skin for sunbathing
- Strongly supports the pigmentation of the skin, it is a powerful tan activator
- It is a strong antioxidant
- At the same time it works as a fantastic insect repellent
Urucum in traditional care for the skin
Urucum has many other lovely qualities, and one of them is its soothing character. It is traditionally used to care for the skin, including skin marked by dermatitis, psoriasis and seborrhoea, and also by hyperpigmentation and vitiligo. For sunbathing it truly suits everyone; it is traditionally said to help the skin feel comfortable and to even out its tone where hyperpigmentation and vitiligo are concerned. This plant is a hundred times richer in beta-carotene than carrot. Urucum is very rich in carotenoids with natural pigments. Urucum contains bixin and norbixin together with vitamins that are traditionally valued for keeping the body youthful. It also contains lutein, which supports the synthesis of melanin.
The seaweed Dunailela salina
Some of our Urucum sun oils we have adorned with this exceptional alga as well, so that their composition would be even finer, caring for your skin while you sunbathe and at the same time helping you reach a beautifully brown tan. At a depth of 400 metres in the Dead Sea, researchers discovered a green alga (Dunaliella Salina) with a high antioxidant content, an inexhaustible storehouse of beta-carotene. Dunaliella Salina contains twice as much chlorophyll and up to eight times more minerals than spirulina. It is also known for its strong antioxidant character. It supports the health of the skin and the eyes, supports immunity and is traditionally valued for supporting the body's natural resilience. Dunaliella Salina, like other algae, is among the most concentrated sources of important nutrients (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, chlorophyll and more). The Dead Sea alga Dunaliella Salina is very rich in beta-carotene (provitamin A) and antioxidants, thanks to which it smooths and softens the skin perfectly. The beta-carotene in this alga gives protection from within and prepares the skin for the sun's rays, so the skin tans more easily and the tan lasts longer.
The Urucum tan activator comes in different consistencies:
- oil
- oleogel
- butter
- two-phase oils
Which tan activator to choose?
URUCUM
The oil was the first thing we began to make, so its consistency is a pure oil macerate with urucum. You can choose from two kinds of URUCUM: one with the scent of coconut, which will multiply that holiday feeling within you, and the other, the original, with a typically feminine fragrance that takes the place of a perfume.
URUCUM SEN MORA
An oil consistency is also what you find in Urucum Sen mora, which differs by the addition of the seaweed Dunaillela salina and astaxanthin. Urucum Sen mora also has bronzer in its description, because all our products marked bronzer contain shimmering particles that bring out the tan.
URUCUM NATURAL
We are thinking of those who prefer unscented products too, and so our range also includes Urucum natural, a pure urucum macerate with only vitamin E added. It has no fragrance at all and you can look forward to a beautiful golden result.
URUCUM MONOI
This is another bronzer from the Urucum range of sun oils, one whose scent will carry you off to the tropics. It too is a pure scented oil containing shimmering particles, and right after applying it the skin looks smoother and darker.
URUCUM - two-phase sun oil
Another product with which we have rounded out our range of sun care is URUCUM - two-phase sun oil, for those who prefer less oily consistencies, though it takes nothing away from the effect. After applying it, a fine film forms and you can set off into the sunshine. Another priceless advantage of the two-phase Urucum is its rich moisture, as it also contains aloe vera extract and hyaluronic acid.
URUCUM OLEOGEL
As a novelty for this summer season we are introducing URUCUM OLEOGEL. It is a pure oil, but thickened with a natural thickener, which gives a far less greasy feeling than a pure oil. Beyond that, our oleogels once again contain the seaweed dunaillela salina. For now they will come in two scents, coconut and mango. The oleogel will come in two variants, either as a bronzer with shimmering particles added, or without. It is entirely up to you which one you choose.
URUCUM - summer butter with seaweed
Not everyone loves oily consistencies, though, and some would rather reach for sun butters. Urucum summer butter is made of urucum macerate combined with other fine butters and oils such as shea butter, cocoa butter and coconut oil. It also contains lanolin, which makes it water-resistant.
A beautiful tan with PANAKEIA tan activators
All these products for a beautiful tan work in the same way, and the only difference is the consistency, so that we can suit every one of you. These tan activators work wonderfully, above all thanks to the extract of the urucum plant, and those containing dunaillela salina are the very finest. So do not let the number of them confuse you if you cannot decide. In truth there are only four kinds, and the other variants differ only in fragrance and in the addition of shimmering particles. Our sun products are not only for sunbathing by the sea or the pool; you can use them on a walk in nature or in a solarium too. All we can say at the end is thank you to nature for giving us such a plant. Our reviews already show that URUCUM can bring a tan even to the palest skin. Of course, the principles of healthy sunbathing still apply. If you are planning a longer stay in the sun, first apply a protective SPF factor and then the tan activator. Do not expose yourself to direct sun between 11.00 and 15.00. Our tan activators contain no UV filters. Do not forget after-sun care either, which will keep your skin moisturised and your tan long-lasting.
