Why is it important to do a patch test?

One can never be careful enough, though, and it is true that many of us have no idea how our skin may respond to different influences at different times. So how can we tell whether a given cosmetic product is truly suitable for us, safe and will not bring on an allergic reaction on our skin?
The most common concern is contact dermatitis, an allergic reaction that arises from direct contact with an allergen – an irritating substance. The body's response arises and shows on the skin as a rule within 24, at the latest within 48 hours of the skin's contact with the allergy-causing substance.
What is a patch test?
A simple way to do it is to test the product on a small area of skin – for example on the forearm or behind the knee, though with facial cosmetics a spot in the face area is better (for example near the ear, the lower jaw, the forehead). Apply a small amount of the product to this spot and over the following hours (at least 24 hours and ideally 48 hours) watch how it responds. If after this time no unusual reaction appears on the skin, the product is safe for you and you can use it without worry according to the recommended application. If the skin at the spot where you applied the product turns red, itches, burns, swells or shows unease in any other way, one of the ingredients of the product is probably irritating for you and may potentially be an allergen for you as well. In this case rinse the skin with lukewarm water and do not use the product under any circumstances.
